B.Tech programme in Energy Engineering has been developed and is being offered by the Department of Hydro and Renewable Energy (HRED) at IIT Roorkee from the academic year 2024-25

Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Govt. of India Shri BS Bhalla released a comprehensive study titled "Advanced Grid-Scale Energy Storage Technologies" conducted by IIT Roorkee under the leadership of Prof Arun Kumar in the august presence of Dr Ajay Mathur, Director General, International Solar Alliance and Prof KK Pant Director, IIT Roorkee, at Atal Akshaya Urja Bhawan, MNRE, New Delhi on Nov. 29, 2023.

Prof Arun Kumar has been nominated as one of the members of Central Advisory Committee of Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC).

Prof Arun Kumar has been nominated as one of the members of Central Advisory Committee of Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC), a statutory body set up under the Electricity Regulatory Commissions Act, 1998 and continued under the Electricity Act, 2003.

About the Department

Department of Hydro and Renewable Energy (HRED) formerly Alternate Hydro Energy Centre, an academic department of Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee was established in the year 1982 and has celebrated 2007 as silver jubilee year.

HRED has been providing professional supports in the field of Small Hydropower Development covering planning, Detailed Project Reports, Detailed Engineering Designs and Construction drawings, Technical Specifications of Turn Key execution/equipment Supply, Refurbishment, Renovation and Modernisation of SHP Stations, Techno-Economic Appraisal, R & D/Monitoring of Projects, Remote Sensing and GIS Based Applications. Technical support to over 25 different state and central government organizations for shp development has been provided. IPPs and financial institutions are utilizing their expertise support for their SHP development.

HRED also worked for several projects related the conservation and management of water bodies.

In the COGNIZANCE 2024, HRED floated problem statements

In the Departmental Events category of COGNIZANCE 2024, HRED floated problem statements in the areas of solar, hydropower, and waste management with a total prize amount of Rs.20,000. 10 teams presented their ideas to a panel of judges and the top 3 were selected as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes.
